Dr Antony Mullen

Leader of the Sunderland Conservatives
Chairman of the Association
Councillor for Barnes Ward

I am currently the Leader of the Sunderland Conservatives, Association Chairman and a councillor for Barnes Ward.

Most of my professional background is in education. I have taught in a local school and at two universities, worked in educational research roles and in educational policy. I also have a Ph.D. on Thatcherism and I run a non-political research network which promotes and advances the study of Margaret Thatcher and Thatcherism.

I was Deputy Chairman (Political) of the Association from 2017-19, during which time I helped the Association to improve its approach to campaigning and to build up its youth wing. As Chairman, I now have oversight of the Association's campaigns, candidates, finances and strategic direction.

In 2018 I was elected councillor for Barnes Ward and have since campaigned effectively on issues like DBS checks and councillors’ allowances.

I was Press Officer for the party in 2018-19, during which time our campaigns featured in the New Statesman and the Sun, among others. I was Deputy Leader of the Conservative Group on the Council in 2019-20.

Barnes team tackling fly-tipping in the ward

Antony Mullen, Helen Greener and Richard Dunn have been delivering the Barnes News this week.

Whilst out in the ward, residents asked Antony to the look at the rubbish dumped in the back lanes running between Greta Terrace and Thelma Street.

Sunderland Conservatives criticise local Labour on school reopenings.

Labour’s Graeme Miller has issued a press statement politicising Sunderland’s schools and advising parents to ignore government advice. This is a reckless move which is solely intended to gain support for Labour – not to benefit local children and parents.
