Sunderland Parking Restrictions Spark Concerns for Older Residents
Sunderland, 25 April 2025 – Conservative Councillor Lyall Reed has raised urgent concerns about the lack of cash payment options at parking machines across Sunderland, which is disproportionately affecting older residents and those without smartphones. The increasing reliance on cashless parking systems, such as the RingGo app, has left many residents unable to pay for parking, effectively restricting their access to key areas of the city.
Councillor Reed, representing St Michael’s Ward, has been contacted by numerous constituents, many of whom are older residents, who are struggling to navigate the digital-only payment systems. “I have been contacted by dozens of residents about this. Many of our elderly residents don’t own smartphones and some people just don't feel comfortable using apps for parking,” said Cllr Reed. “They’re being unfairly penalised and, in some cases, prevented from parking in areas they’ve accessed for years. This is not just an inconvenience—it’s a barrier to their independence and mobility.”
Sunderland City Council’s shift to cashless parking, including the use of RingGo for on-street bays and council car parks, has been promoted as a convenient solution. However, the absence of traditional pay-and-display machines accepting cash or card payments has created significant challenges for those who rely on non-digital payment methods.
Cllr Reed is calling for immediate action to address the problem, including the reinstatement of cash-compatible parking machines in key locations and the introduction of alternative payment options for non-smartphone users. “We need a system that works for everyone, not just those who are tech-savvy,” he added. “Sunderland should be an inclusive city where all residents can access public spaces without being excluded by technology - For many cash remains king".
The concerns come amidst broader parking challenges in Sunderland, with Cllr Reed already campaigning for solutions such as School Streets schemes to tackle congestion and unsafe parking in St Michael’s Ward. He urges the council to listen to residents’ concerns and act swiftly to ensure equitable access to parking facilities.
