Sunderland Conservatives Secure Commitment to Save Historic M&S Facade
Sunderland, March 26, 2025 – After over a year of dedicated campaigning by the Sunderland Conservatives, a significant victory has been achieved for the preservation of the city’s heritage. At the most recent full Council meeting of Sunderland City Council, Labour Councillor Michael Mordey, Leader of the Council, committed to protecting the stunning front facade of the former Marks & Spencer building on High Street West.
The campaign, spearheaded by Conservative Councillor Lyall Reed, began over 12 months ago with efforts to have the building officially listed due to its architectural and historical value. Despite setbacks, the Conservatives persisted, with former Conservative Councillor Greg Peacock asking the Leader of the Council,Michael Mordey, at the latest Council meeting to commit to protecting the front facade of the old M&S building. It was revealed that Sunderland City Council is the owner of the building. Under sustained pressure from the Conservative group over the last 12 months, the Council Leader finally pledged to safeguard the iconic facade, marking a triumph for local heritage and community advocacy.
Cllr Lyall Reed commented, “This is a fantastic outcome for Sunderland. The front of the old M&S building is a beautiful piece of our city’s history, and we’re thrilled that our campaign has succeeded in securing its protection. It’s a testament to what can be achieved when we stand up for what matters to our community.”
Former Cllr Greg Peacock added, “It’s been a long fight, but this result shows the power of persistence. The people of Sunderland deserve to see their heritage respected, and we’re proud to have played a key role in making that happen.”
The Sunderland Conservatives will continue to monitor the implementation of this commitment, ensuring that the Council follows through on its promise to preserve the facade of the High Street West landmark.
