Conservatives demand apology from Sunderland Labour after Grooming Gang Enquiry U-turn by Labour Government
It was announced last week that the Labour Government will finally launch a national inquiry into grooming gangs - something that Sunderland Labour councillors voted against just weeks ago when Opposition Conservative councillors brought a vote on it to City Hall.
The motion proposed by the Sunderland Conservatives in January called on Sunderland City Council to endorse a national inquiry into the grooming gang scandal that has affected many working class communities up and down the county.
The original motion was amended by Labour councillors with opposition councillors saying that they had "gutted" the original motion and that they had removed the calls for a national inquiry.
The Sunderland Conservatives are now calling on Sunderland Labour to apologise for their decision to vote against a national grooming gang inquiry after Keir Starmer announced a national inquiry would take place in a dramatic u-turn.
Commenting Sunderland Conservatives leader Cllr Antony Mullen said:
"Labour councillors in Sunderland put party before principle and said they did not want a national grooming gang inquiry.
Louise Casey has published her review findings which note that politicians have been scared of appearing racist when discovering Pakistani child rapists operating in their area.
Labour is guilty of this same negligence through political grandstanding. They must now perform the same u-turn as their national party and fully support a national inquiry whilst also apologising for their spinelessness."
