PETITION: Keep the existing roundabout at the Bungalow cafe

Dame Dorothy Roundabout

We, the undersigned, call on Sunderland City Council to keep the existing roundabout at the Bungalow cafe junction (Harbour View, Pier View & Roker Terrace).

Many in our community, including business owners and local residents, rely on the current system for their daily commutes and businesses. Introducing traffic lights could lead to increased congestion, longer waiting times, and may detract from the fluidity and character of our area. Numerous case studies have shown that traffic lights cause more bottlenecks in areas previously managed well with roundabouts.

However, a study by the UK Department for Transport highlights that roundabouts, when compared to standard signal-controlled intersections, can reduce waiting times and lower accident rates.  In order to better organise the new cycle lane, the Council may wish to install zebra crossings to facilitate better safety for all, without the need for traffic lights at this junction.
